Kathy Kuo Home’s Creative Salon
For designer Kathy Kuo, the dream of a musical salon was both deeply personal and wonderfully communal. Her My Rowe Design imagines a room that shifts with the rhythm of the day, serving as a quiet creative retreat in the morning before transforming into a lively gathering spot after hours. Fringed drapery and dark walnut-finish millwork create an enveloping backdrop, while velvet, aged brass, marble, and richly layered textiles combine in an aesthetic that feels luxurious and immersive.
My Rowe Design is…
Soulful
Layered
Intimate
“The Adler Sofa in dusty rose velvet [is] strong and soft at the same time, which is exactly what I wanted.”
At the center of it all, an 110” Adler Sofa in mauve velvet brings spacious softness and a feminine note to the salon. “It just becomes the heart of the room,” says Kathy. “The proportions are so generous, people settle in, and they stay.” Flanked by Odessa Slip Dining Chairs in a floral stripe and Petra Swivel Ottomans in woodland tapestry, the seating arrangements create a sociable setting for conversation, music, and everything in between. Here, the imagined occupant of Kathy’s space might gather with her circle of eclectic friends for a spontaneous evening of creativity. “Someone brings a guitar, another friend sings something from memory,” imagines the designer, “the marble tables hold drinks and handwritten lyrics, ottomans get pulled wherever another seat is needed.” A salon in the truest sense of the word, the space would allow creativity, connection, and the simple joy of making something together to take center stage.
“I have always wanted a musical salon; a room that is mine during the day and everyone’s at night.”

Sources of Inspiration
Growing up in a diplomatic family, we moved constantly. I learned early that home is not a location, it’s a feeling, and the objects that traveled with us were what made each new place ours. I think constantly about materials, how things are made. That’s always been [my inspiration], curiosity about craft and the belief that beauty is never accidental.
Room to Design
What I love in any room is designing it so there’s an energetic pulse. I think about clients: how do they actually live? What makes them feel most like themselves? Which means every room is different, and that’s exactly why I still love it.
Travel Destination
Every trip changes you a little, that’s the whole point. I visited 30+ countries before I was 30, learning from artisans from Tuscany to Marrakech. Seeing how things are actually made by people who have been doing it for generations changes how you see every object.
Music to Fuel Creativity
Piano-led jazz, spiritual jazz, chamber music, good folk, soulful singer-songwriters. Anything that feels like there’s a real human being behind it!
